What It Truly Means to Be an Inclusive Makeup Artist

As a makeup artist, I have always believed that beauty is not one-size-fits-all. Over the years, I have made it my mission to brand myself as an inclusive makeup artist. But what does that really mean? Is it just a buzzword, or is there something deeper behind it? Today, I want to peel back the layers and share what inclusivity truly means to me, my work, and the beauty industry as a whole.

Inclusivity Is More Than Just a Trend

Inclusivity is not just about having a diverse range of foundation shades or working with models of different ethnicities. It is about creating a space where everyone feels seen, valued, and celebrated. It means understanding that beauty exists in every skin tone, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and ability. As an inclusive makeup artist, my goal is to ensure that no one feels excluded from the conversation about beauty.

For me, inclusivity starts with listening. I take the time to understand my clients’ unique needs, preferences, and concerns. Whether it is finding the perfect shade for deep melanin-rich skin, adapting techniques for mature skin, or creating looks that align with a client’s gender expression, I am here to make sure everyone feels confident and beautiful in their own skin.

Breaking Down Barriers in Beauty

The beauty industry has come a long way, but there is still work to be done. For too long, certain groups have been underrepresented or overlooked. As an inclusive makeup artist, I see it as my responsibility to challenge these norms and push for change. This means:

  • Celebrating Diversity: I actively seek out and work with clients from all walks of life. Whether for a wedding, a photoshoot, or a special event, I want my portfolio to reflect the beautiful diversity of the world we live in.

  • Educating Myself: Inclusivity requires constant learning. I stay informed about the latest products, techniques, and tools that cater to a wide range of skin types and tones. I also educate myself on cultural sensitivities and the unique beauty needs of different communities.

  • Advocating for Representation: I use my platform to amplify voices that are often marginalised in the beauty industry. Whether through social media, collaborations, or conversations with my peers, I am committed to advocating for greater representation.

Inclusivity in Action

So, what does inclusivity look like in my day-to-day work? Here are a few ways I put my values into practice:

  • Customised Consultations: Every client is unique, and I tailor my approach to meet their individual needs. From skincare prep to the final look, I ensure that every step of the process is personalised.

  • A Diverse Kit: My makeup kit is stocked with products that cater to all skin tones and types. I invest in brands that prioritise inclusivity and are committed to creating products that work for everyone. I don't have it? I'll buy it!

  • Safe Spaces: I strive to create a welcoming and judgement-free environment for all my clients. Whether you are a bride, a non-binary individual exploring makeup for the first time, or someone with a skin condition like vitiligo or acne, my chair is a safe space for you.

Why Inclusivity Matters

Inclusivity is not just a part of my brand, it is at the core of who I am as a makeup artist and as a person. It is about more than just makeup; it is about empowerment, representation, and breaking down barriers. When someone sits in my chair, I want them to feel like they are not just getting a makeup application; they are being seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.

So, what does it really mean to be an inclusive makeup artist? It means embracing the beauty in everyone and using my skills to uplift and inspire. It means being part of a movement that is redefining beauty standards and making the world a more inclusive place, one face at a time.

Why do I care so much?

Because it makes me happy.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. If you have ever felt excluded from the beauty world, know that there is a place for you here. Let’s celebrate your unique beauty together.
