Finding an Inclusive, Cross-Dresser Friendly Makeup Artist in Sydney

My Journey to Creating a Safe Space

2/4/20265 min read

It's been a hot minute since I planned to make this post, but I am just so grateful that I finally found the inspiration to share this story. For the longest time, I've wanted to write about being a makeup artist who is genuinely cross-dresser friendly and trans-inclusive, but I didn't know how to put it into words. Then something beautiful happened that changed everything.

Meeting My First Cross-Dresser Client: A Life-Changing Experience

I had a client reach out to me who identified as a mature cross-dresser – very specific, right? I was so excited because while I've worked with a few trans clients before, I had never actually met a cross-dresser in real life or provided makeup and hair services specifically for the cross-dressing community.

When she came to me (and I use "she" and "her" because I know her in her girl form), she made it very clear: "I am not trans. I am a cross-dresser." As an inclusive makeup artist, this was when I learned something incredibly important – everyone is different, and everyone is at a different stage of their lives, especially when it comes to gender identity and sexuality.

What Makes a Great Cross-Dresser Friendly Makeup Artist?

This particular client means the world to me. It's only early February, and she has already booked me three times because of how happy she is with my service. That level of trust and satisfaction is incredibly flattering. During one of our sessions, I joked, "Ha ha, I need to give you a package deal so you can save some money!"

She told me something that really touched my heart. She had just sold her business and was essentially retired (she's almost 70), and she said to me, "Money is not the problem – just take care of me." Wow. Just wow.

I asked her directly, "Are you really that happy with my service?" Her response was simple but profound: "You treat me like a friend." She even posted a review on my page that I'll share below.

The Warmth of Genuine Connection

When I saw that review, my heart suddenly felt warm – it's the kind of warmth you can't fully explain in words. At our next meeting, I asked her why she kept booking me, and her answer revealed something important about what cross-dressers need from their makeup artists.

She said, "It's daunting to go to someone while dressing up. You didn't see me differently. You didn't think I'm someone doing something unusual. You didn't judge me. And when I tell you crazy stories and we're talking, it's just so easy."

Understanding the Cross-Dressing Community in Sydney

From the past year, my business has been very focused on being inclusive, and this moment made me realize – this is it. This is when all that intention pays off. I've actually made a difference in someone's life.

She told me she has literally no one to talk about this with. She has a wife who is pretty open about her cross-dressing, but it's still not something they discuss in depth. It's not something she feels proud showing her wife. But with me? She said sitting in my chair is comfortable and comforting.

I don't think anything can fully express how that made me feel.

Cross-Dresser vs. Trans: Understanding the Difference

I learned so much about the cross-dressing community through our conversations. Coming from a place where I wasn't exposed to different types of sexuality or gender expression, I asked her directly: "What's the difference between you and someone who is trans? Can you call yourself trans?"

Her explanation was enlightening:

"A trans person has a gender identity – but my identity shifts and changes. This is just a dress-up for me. When I dress up, I feel like a different person, but I don't want to be that person forever. I want to be myself – the self I've known for years, for decades. I'm not ready, and I will never remove the identity of my whole life when I'm dressing as a man."

She explained that there's a huge community in Sydney of cross-dressers. Based on her experience, she chose to identify as a cross-dresser because she's not a full-time woman. She feels like a girl sometimes when she dresses up, but when she presents in her normal male identity, "the lady just goes away," and she doesn't want to let that go.

When someone is trans, they want to transition and make that their identity. But for her, it's different.

I asked her, "If times had allowed it, if it was accepted in your generation, would you have transitioned?"

She said no – it's a whole different scenario. "I'm still a man, but I just like to dress."

What Cross-Dressers Want from Their Makeup Artist

Similar to my trans clients, the first thing cross-dressing clients often say to me is: "I don't want to look drag."

I think there's a generalization that when you're a man and you have your makeup done, it's automatically going to look like drag makeup. My clients specifically tell me, "I want to look passable."

Here's what I tell every trans client and cross-dresser client I work with:

I naturally do makeup that looks natural. I don't do bold or drag looks – it's just my natural flow state. If you want to look more drag, I can refer you to someone I know who specializes in that. But if you want natural makeup that helps you look and feel feminine, that's my expertise.

My Approach to Cross-Dresser Makeup Services

What I will do for you:

  • Cover facial hair and mustache shadows professionally

  • Soften facial features to create a more feminine appearance

  • Make you feel comfortable and beautiful in your own skin

I'm not a glamorous makeup artist in general, and I think that's actually what draws people to me. I create authentic, wearable looks that help people feel like themselves – just enhanced.

That said, there's no one-size-fits-all template. Every client is unique. I just had a bride who wanted blue eyeshadow, which was interesting and beautiful, and I loved that for her!
