How I Strive to Be an Allergy-Sensitive & Friendly Makeup Artist and Hairstylist
Back in Indonesia, allergies weren’t something I had to worry about too much when working as a makeup artist. But in Australia, it’s a different story, many clients have sensitivities or allergies that need to be considered. To provide a safe and comfortable experience for everyone, I’ve made several changes to my kit and techniques to minimise the risk of triggering unknown allergies or sensitivities. Here are some of the adjustments I’ve made:
1. Eyelash Glue: Latex-Free & Hypoallergenic
One of the most common allergens in beauty products is latex, which is often found in traditional lash adhesives. To prevent any potential reactions, I use Kiss Lash Adhesive with Aloe - Clear, which I purchase from Priceline Pharmacy. This strip lash adhesive is:
Hypoallergenic
Odourless
Latex-free
Formaldehyde-free
Infused with soothing aloe
Dries clear for a seamless look
This ensures that even clients with sensitive eyes or known latex allergies can wear false lashes comfortably without irritation.
2. Latex-Free Sponges: A Simple but Important Swap
I never really thought about makeup sponges being an issue—until I learned that many standard beauty sponges contain latex. To make my kit more inclusive, I’ve switched to latex-free sponges, which are made from hydrophilic polyurethane (PU). These sponges are:
Fragrance-free
Unscented
Just as soft and effective as regular beauty sponges
The best part? They work exactly the same as traditional sponges, so the quality of application remains flawless while reducing the risk of irritation.
3. Fragrance-Free & Hypoallergenic Makeup Products
Fragrance is a common irritant for many people, especially those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or rosacea. To cater to all clients, I’ve gradually transitioned my kit to include fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products whenever possible.
This small switch makes a big difference for clients who may not even realise they are sensitive to fragrance until they experience irritation.
4. Patch Testing & Client Awareness
Before applying new or unfamiliar products, I always ask my clients about any known allergies or skin sensitivities. When necessary, I perform a quick patch test to ensure that the product won’t cause irritation. I also educate my clients on the importance of knowing their skin’s triggers and how to spot potential irritants in their beauty routines.
5. Clean Brushes & Hygiene Practices
Good hygiene isn’t just about cleanliness—it’s also about preventing allergic reactions. I take extra precautions to ensure all my tools and products are sanitised between clients. This includes:
Using disposable applicators for mascaras, lipsticks, and glosses
Cleaning and disinfecting brushes with gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
Double cleansing the brushes
Keeping separate brushes for clients with highly sensitive skin
Avoiding cross-contamination by never double-dipping into products
