The Bridal Trial Saga - Do You Need A Bridal Trial?

To try on not to try. Is that really the question?

I might be the worst person to write this article because… while most makeup artists and hairstylists will insist that bridal trials are a must, I’m here to tell you that maybe, just maybe, you don’t always need one.

I’m not going to lie... bridal trials are extra income, and I do like the money. But there are times when skipping a trial makes sense. And if you know me, I like to keep things chill. I’m probably one of the chillest makeup artists you’ll meet. Inside, I might be screaming, but on the outside, I’m calm. Life is complicated enough; why make it harder?

That said, I do usually prefer having a bridal trial with my brides. It helps me understand their personality, ensures we’re on the same page, and prevents surprises especially when a client says, “Do whatever you want.” A trial gives us a chance to experiment without the pressure of the wedding day ticking away.

But I get it, not everyone has the time or resources for a trial, and that’s okay. So here’s my perspective:

Why I Love Bridal Trials

1. Collaboration and real-life results
With me, a bridal trial isn’t just about recreating a Pinterest photo. What you think will look good might not translate perfectly in real life, and that’s okay! I’ll suggest ideas and try different options, so you can see how it actually looks. Most of the time, brides say, “I only look good in peach,” and I might ask, “Want to try pink?” Everything is collaborative, nothing is forced. Honestly, since I don’t stick to a single style; if you want goth makeup for your wedding, I can do that too.

2. Understanding your vibe
Some makeup artists are all bubbles, rainbows, and sunshine. Others are calm, grounded, and chill—think quiet champagne mornings with zero chaos. Both are valid, and I can be either. A trial lets me get a sense of your energy: do you love a fun, lively environment, or a calm, relaxed one? Knowing that helps me tailor the experience to you.

3. Saves time and stress on the big day
Trials are a chance to practice and fine-tune your look. If we skip it, the consultation will take longer on your wedding day, and time is already tight. Even a small delay can make things stressful. A trial ensures everything runs smoothly, so you can enjoy the morning without feeling rushed.

When You Might Not Need a Trial

1. You already trust the artist
If you’ve met the makeup artist before, or come highly recommended by someone you trust, a trial might not be necessary. For example, I have photographers I work with regularly—I know who I trust, who I recommend, and who I wouldn’t. If you’ve done your research, checked referrals, and your gut tells you they’re the right fit, skipping the trial could work.

That’s really it. That’s the main reason you could skip it.

Tips for a Successful Bridal Trial

  1. Keep Things Consistent: If you plan to get a spray tan or eyelash extensions for your wedding, do the same for your trial. This ensures the makeup matches perfectly.

  2. Prepare Your Skin: Maintain a consistent skincare routine leading up to your wedding. Avoid new products close to the big day to prevent unexpected reactions.

  3. Dress Appropriately: Wear a white top or something similar to your wedding dress colour. This helps you visualise how the makeup will look with your attire.

  4. Bring Accessories: Jewellery or hair accessories help make the trial more authentic and allow the artist to tailor your look.

  5. Communicate Openly: Be honest about your preferences. If you don’t love something, speak up. Collaboration ensures the final look reflects your style and comfort.

The Bottom Line

A bridal trial is a learning experience for both the bride and the artist. It ensures your vision aligns with the artist’s expertise, helping you feel your most beautiful on the wedding day. Bridal trials are highly recommended, but ultimately, you know what’s best for you. If you even slightly doubt whether a trial is necessary, do it. But if you completely trust your artist, you can skip it and still feel confident walking down the aisle because peace of mind is numba wannnnnnn!!!
